Ryan Garcia (15-0, 13 KOs) is a rising star with an abundance of potential. He has the hopes and dreams of Golden Boy Promotions sitting heavily upon his shoulders. Garcia’s burden is a nice one to have, but it comes with plenty of pressure. He’s only 20 years old, but he’s being groomed as Golden Boy’s next big thing. He needs an impressive win over Carlos Morales on Saturday, Sept. 1 to keep the hype-train rolling.

There’s a lot to like about Garcia. He’s a young, tall super featherweight with power in both fists. Garcia was an amateur standout, and he has transitioned well to the professional ranks. His record is flawless, and Garcia possesses a gaudy 87 percent knockout rating. Garcia has knocked out most of his opponents, but he hasn’t faced elite opposition. That’s not a criticism — just a fact.

Golden Boy is intelligently bringing Garcia along at a measured pace. The company deserves credit for how it’s managing Garcia’s career. He’s young and needs time to develop as a professional boxer. Many careers have ended prematurely with unfulfilled promise because fighters were thrown into the fire too early. The damage to these men has been physical and psychological.

Jeff Lacy could have enjoyed more success if he wasn’t matched up against Joe Calzaghe soon into his short-lived title reign. Boxers like Michael Moorer and Michael Grant weren’t the same after tasting defeat freshly into their prime. Some fighters never recover their edge or confidence after taking an early loss. Golden Boy doesn’t want Garcia to become the next boxer that’s talked about regarding wasted potential.

This is only Garcia’s third year as a professional. He’s still in the process of building up his résumé. Garcia took a big step up in competition in May when he defeated Jayson Velez by unanimous decision. Velez came into the fight as a former world title contender. He had four losses on his record at the time, but he’s never been knocked out. Garcia wasn’t able to knock out Velez, but he completely out-boxed him and looked good doing it.

Morales is several steps down from Velez, and Golden Boy could have found a better opponent to put in against Garcia. This is one area where a critique of Golden Boy’s matchmaking is valid. It doesn’t make sense for Garcia to move backward in terms of competition. Hopefully, Golden Boy made this bout because they wanted to keep Garcia active, or they couldn’t find a better adversary in this time frame.

Boxrec.com rates Morales as the 61st super featherweight in the world. In comparison, Velez is 54th. Morales has a record of 17-2-3, with 6 KOs. He turned professional in 2012, but he has zero notable victories. He lost to Alberto Machado in 2017 by a lopsided decision.

Garcia-Morales will face each other at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Garcia is battling the 28-year-old Morales on Saturday night, but the guy that he wants is Gervonta’ Tank’ Davis. Garcia wants Davis, but he’s not going to be given the chance by Golden Boy as of yet. They’re going to continue to have Garcia taking baby steps until they feel he’s ready for that step up.

Garcia (15-0, 13 KOs) puts his unbeaten record on the line against the veteran Morales for a fight that will be streamed live on Facebook Watch in the United States and around the globe on Golden Boy Fight Night Page. This is a fight that will get the 20-year-old Garcia a lot of publicity if his 1.1 million Instagram followers take the time to watch him.

This isn’t the opponent that the highly popular Garcia wants to fight. Garcia is facing Morales because that’s who his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions want him to fight. Garcia has bigger ambitions. He wants to challenge WBA super featherweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis to take his title. Garcia sees Davis as a winnable fight for him.

Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya wants to put him on the undercard of Saul Canelo Alvarez’s December card. Canelo is fighting on September 15 against IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo wants to fight in December to make up for his lost May 5 date earlier this year when he was suspended. It’s unclear whether Canelo will fight in December if he’s beaten by Golovkin on September 15 or if he gets hurt in winning. Certainly a knockout loss for Canelo would result in him taking the rest of 2018 off, as it would be a bad idea for him to get back inside the ring so soon after that. Garcia will be kept busy by Golden Boy regardless.

Fighting on Canelo’s December card will give Garcia a great deal of attention from boxing fans. It would be even better if Golden Boy matches Garcia with an opponent that the hardcore and casual fans have heard of. It would mean a lot more for the boxing public if Ryan Garcia is matched against someone credible.

I’ve talked to Oscar about it,” Ryan Garcia said to ESPN.com. “We’re going to take our time, but I’m the type of person who wants it all right now. I need that title right now. I want to fight [titlist] Gervonta [Davis] right now. People have to hold me back. I just love challenges. Everybody wait up and see. Everybody say what they want. My time will come.”

Garcia is where Davis was at three years ago in facing lesser opposition. In 2015, the then 20-year-old Davis was fighting journeymen level opposition like Luis Sanchez, Cristobal Cruz, Recky Dulay, Alberto Mora and Israel Suarez. It wasn’t until Davis was 22-years-old in 2017 that he was finally allowed to step it up against the top guys. If Golden Boy Promotions follows the same schedule as Mayweather

Promotions did with Davis, then we won’t see Garcia fight for a world title until 2020. Garcia will be 22-years-old and he’ll have a better chance of success than he would if he fought for a world title right now.

Garcia is a star in the making. Even though he’s fighting in a weight division that isn’t traditionally one that is widely followed by boxing fans, Garcia is on pace to surpass the highly popular Canelo Alvarez in the near future. Garcia is arguably well ahead of the popularity that Canelo had earlier in his career. Garcia can become a superstar in no time if he can keep winning and if he’s able to beat the best in the super featherweight and lightweight divisions.

Golden Boy Promotions’ standout prospect returns to the ring tonight with Ryan Garcia being the man at the front for Oscar De La Hoya and co. for trialing the new partnership the company struck with Facebook to stream fights for free to the public.

Tonight’s fight takes place at Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California.

Unlike past live streams, this new Facebook Watch feature goes out to everyone world-wide, not just for people in the US or those in the UK.

It also features a main event card on Facebook for the first time by one of the major promoters.

Not an undercard stream like the usual Facebook live bouts have been in the past.

The stream tonight on Facebook will kick off at 5pm West coast time in the US, which is 8pm in the East.

For those staying up in the UK that works out as Sunday morning for the streaming of the boxing tonight at 1am approx start time.

It is totally free and will be exclusively live on Facebook.

It should be an interesting experiment to watch.

The second fight planned by Golden Boy for this format is Jorge Linares’ comeback fight after the Lomachenko loss for later in the year, so a lot will hinge on tonight’s stream going well.

The stands that night were filled with Garcia's chief fan base -- screaming teenage girls and their parents. One would have to go back to the mid-1990s to find a similar scene, during the rise of the Golden Boy himself, Oscar De La Hoya, who happens to be Garcia's promoter and who knows a thing or two about attracting fans beyond hard-core boxing aficionados.

"He has the charisma, and he has the 'it' factor," De La Hoya told ESPN. "It's a matter of testing him up in the ring, and if he passes the test with flying colors, we have something special on our hands. I'm actually guiding his career very carefully and paying attention to his career very carefully because with this guy's following and his potential, he can be the next superstar in boxing."

Garcia, the 2017 ESPN.com prospect of the year, has grown his fan base on social media in large part thanks to his boyish good looks and the entertaining and fun-filled training videos he regularly posts, not to mention the occasional wacky video of him displaying funky dance moves.

Asked how it was possible for a fighter who has yet to have a big fight or win a title, and who has had only limited national television exposure, to connect with so many fans, Garcia, who turned 20 on April 8, said, "The fun I bring to it. I'm trying to involve the fans and bring in a crowd where not only do they love boxing but they love me as a person. The generation now is on social media, so you have to use that to bring in that type of crowd into boxing."

Garcia continued, "I think it's the energy I bring. People love positivity, and I think that's what I show. I work on my technique, but when I do a video, I want people to be amazed by the speed or the power. The casual fans don't care if your hands are up or your hands are down. They just want to see you knocking people out and having fun, and they like me because I'm a kid, I guess. I think that's what it is, and girls like me. I'm not gonna get into that."

Garcia laughed as he made his remark about his female fan base, but he knows he could easily be on the cover of a teen magazine.

"You just have to be yourself," he said. "The hard-core fans will always love it, but you have to involve the casual people, too, and that's what I do."

But Garcia also is more than just a pretty face, a point he hopes to continue to pound home by performing well when he takes a bit of a step up in competition against Carlos Morales on Saturday (Facebook Watch, 9 p.m. ET) at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

The scheduled 10-round lightweight fight is the main event of the second "Golden Boy Fight Night" card that will stream live on Facebook Watch as part of the promotional company's deal with the social media giant.

"Whether [Morales] thinks I'm a kid or that I'm always on social media -- that's irrelevant," Garcia said. "What matters is what will happen in the ring. For this fight, you can expect big numbers. It will set new precedents. This Facebook deal was made for me!

"I expect for him to come in shape. He has a lot of experience against some pretty good opposition, like Alberto Machado, but I also see some weaknesses that I feel I could expose. I feel way better [for] this fight than the last fight. I've had a long training camp. This fight will be at 135 [pounds]. I'm not saying I can't make 130, but we're just going to go for the 135 this fight."

Garcia has been campaigning at junior lightweight, where he has boxed for several years. But he is beginning to feel the strains of making that weight, so this fight will be at lightweight.

"I don't see a much longer career at 130. Maybe if I get a title [shot]," Garcia said. "I'm growing. I've been at 130 since I was 16. My body is filling out, I'm changing. You won't see me much longer at 130."

Garcia's bout on May 4 was against former featherweight world title challenge Jayson Velez, and although Garcia scored a near-shutout decision win, he was not at all happy with his performance and is expecting a better one against Morales.

Although lightweight Ryan "Kingry" Garcia has never had a big fight, has never faced a top opponent and has only 15 professional bouts, he has more than 1.1 million followers on Instagram and stunningly drew nearly 7,000 fans to the StubHub Center in Carson, California, for his most recent fight on May 4 as the headliner of a Golden Boy Boxing on ESPN card.

The stands that night were filled with Garcia's chief fan base -- screaming teenage girls and their parents. I go in there, I boxed, I hurt my hand.

"If you watch the fight, I hurt him many times in the fight, I just couldn't finish him because my hands were still healing and they were hurting every time I punched him. It was a mediocre performance. That wasn't my best. I could do way better than that. You're only as good as your last fight, so I can't wait until this one because I had whole training camp."

Two fights ago, Morales (17-2-3, 6 KOs), 28, a Mexico native fighting out of Los Angeles, lost a 10-round decision to Machado, who went on to win a junior lightweight world title in his next fight.

"We had a solid eight-week training camp. Now it's time to perform. Ryan Garcia cannot knock me out," Morales said. "We're going to make it a smart fight during every single second of every round. All of my fights have been against tough contenders, and that has given me a lot of confidence. I've known Ryan Garcia for a while. We used to train at the same gym, and he has the same goofball personality that he's always had. But this is business, and there will be no games when we step in the ring."

De La Hoya is a strong believer in Garcia's potential. When he signed Garcia (15-0, 13 KOs), of Victorville, California, who was 215-15 and won 15 national titles as an amateur, he proclaimed that it was Golden Boy's most important signing since a young Canelo Alvarez in 2010.

So far De La Hoya has not seen anything to change his mind.

"I think he's on the fast track," De La Hoya said. "The Velez fight showed me what he's made of. He obviously knew that he made some mistakes. He needs to correct a few things in his arsenal that he needs to work on. But Ryan Garcia is on the fast track and possibly to fighting in a world title fight in the first quarter of next year.

"Ryan has the talent, he has the amateur pedigree. This fight on Saturday will tell us a lot. It's a good step up from Velez."

If Garcia wins, De La Hoya said he would be back for another fight in December, possibly on the next Alvarez undercard.

"We have a big event that we're gunning for in December in Las Vegas or in New York, and he would be on that," De La Hoya said.

Should Alvarez defeat Gennady Golovkin in their Sept. 15 rematch, De La Hoya said there's a good chance Alvarez will headline the December event.

De La Hoya said what he wants to see from Garcia on Saturday is an effort to get a knockout even if he doesn't deliver one.

"I want to see that, if he can't knock Morales out, I want to see him try to stop him," De La Hoya said. "I want to see that killer instinct. Ryan Garcia can box, he can fight, he can move, he has the looks, he has the charisma, he has 1.1 million followers on Instagram. I think we have the real deal, but Carlos is no walk in the park. He should be a real test."

As far as Garcia is concerned, he can't move quickly enough in his career.

"I've talked to Oscar about it," he said. "We're going to take our time, but I'm the type of person who wants it all right now. I need that title right now. I want to fight [titlist] Gervonta [Davis] right now. People have to hold me back. I just love challenges. Everybody wait up and see. Everybody say what they want. My time will come."
